About Us

About Us

Holidays by Cycle is a non profit Social Enterprise, initially set up in 2013 to provide a European wide accommodation and cycle hire linking service and establish a business that promoted sustainable travel and less reliance on cars as a means of transport. With the growing popularity of cycling on holiday, the expanding network of routes, the increase in cycle hire outlets, improved integration of rail networks and the growing awareness of "green" issues the formula seemed ideal.  As the concept developed, it became clear that cycle tourism in Europe lacked any single point of reference that brought the resources, business and services together to enable people to arrange any level or type of cycle related holiday. Holidays by Cycle is now the only online resource that combines cycle hire, cycle routes, cycle holidays, rail networks and the only European directory of cycling friendly accommodation.

Social Enterprise

Holidays by Cycle has a clear agenda - to list and network cycle-tourism related services across Europe and promote cycling as a viable, sustainable and mainstream tourism activity. As a consequence we hope to assist the growth of this recognised area of sustainable tourism and support other European and global objectives to reduce carbon omissions within the tourism sector. On a more local level, we hope to assist private businesses (accommodation, cycle hire, tours etc) in linking their services in a way that further progress these aims as well as enhancing local economies. In this respect we trade for both social and environmental purposes. Using this service is free, however, we still function as a business and are reliant on trade to progress and enhance our objectives and therefore monetise the business through commission and subscription in respect of the companies and services listed. Profits will be predominantly reinvested to promote the businesses that list on the site and improve our appeal. Anyone directly employed to develop and administrate the business will be paid a fair wage, as directed by Social Enterprise UK Guidelines, and profits will not be used primarily to enhance the wealth of individuals or shareholders, although there may be benefactors. For more information about social enterprises, please visit Social Enterprise UK.

How it Works

Holidays by Cycle is for everyone, not just experienced touring cyclists or bike owners. You may want to have bikes delivered to your holiday accommodation for some relaxing local rides, arrive in Paris by train and spend a weekend experiencing the sights of the city on two wheels, or use the expertise of an organised tour provider to plan your trip - whatever your preference, this site will provide you with all the contacts you need to arrange and plan your holiday. All listing enquiries are made direct to the respective businesses and we take no commission, meaning your costs are minimised and you can cut out the car all together by booking a train journey via Rail Europe and The Train Line booking gateways. The site also provides a great resource of cycling holiday related information and informative guides, provided by those in the know, and a comprehensive books section for further reading. Key points to the site are:

  • suitable for all level of cyclist, even those with no bikes!
  • accommodation is linked to local cycle hire when possible via maps
  • long distance route suggestions available
  • European coverage
  • Rail Europe and The Train Line ticket link
  • organised holiday listings
  • guides and information provided by "experts"
  • booking direct with owners

Accommodation Policy

Our accommodation listings are described as “cycle friendly”. We try to list accommodation that is part of a national recognised accredited scheme (Cyclists Welcome, Bett + Bike, Fietsers Welcom, Bed&Bike etc.) However, we do not exclude those that are not. We do stipulate though that, as an absolute minimum, accommodation must have the facility to store bikes and be welcoming to cyclists. If you wish to search just accredited accommodation, use the filter option Cycle Friendly Accreditation. We do not inspect individual accommodation providers, and would welcome feedback to ensure standards are maintained.
